The Personal History of David Copperfield
The Westminster Press, 1911.
A sumptuous Christmas Gift book. Large quarto. Red cloth, lettered in gilt and black, with gilt and black vignette, in the original printed dustwrapper. Tipped-in colour frontispiece with eighteen further tipped-in colour plates, under captioned tissue guards, plus a coloured illustration on title page, by Reynolds. A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper, browning to spine and some wear to spine ends and corners. Owner's embossed stamp to front free endpaper.
David Copperfield, described by Dickens as "my favourite child", marks a step change in the author's career, a transition from composer of popular, picaresque, comedies to great novelist. It now ranks as one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. This bright copy beautifully illustrates the tale.
