Macray worked at the Bodleian Library, and produced this significant nineteenth century edition of Clarendon's history from the original manuscript.
Clarendon's account of the Civil War is highly regarded, being among the "most valuable of all the contemporary accounts of the civil wars" (DNB). As Chancellor of the Exchequer and later Lord Chancellor Hyde worked closely with both Charles I and II, before differences led to his exile to France in 1667.
