First edition. Original blue-grey paper covered boards with a cream buckram spine. Author's presentation copy inscribed on the front endpaper, "To Mr W.L. Mollison with kindest regards from Siegfried Sassoon / October '09". Printed on handmade paper, edges uncut. Poem titles and first initial printed in red. A very good copy with a little wear to the corners and darkening to the spine.
A rare, early collection of poems privately published for the author's own distribution, in an edition likely to be less than 50 copies, inscribed to his tutor at Clare College, Cambridge who encouraged Sassoon to publish his poetry.
Sassoon went up to Cambridge to read law at the insistence of his uncle and trustee, the latter seeking to instil some mental discipline in his young and wayward charge. Sassoon didn't care for the law, preferring to write poetry and play cricket. Eventually he went to Mollison, senior tutor at Clare, to change from Law to Ancient History.
