First Rackham edition, deluxe issue. Large 4to. Number 302 of 525 copies, printed on large hand made paper and signed by Rackham. Original publisher's full white vellum, with elaborate gilt decoration and lettering. Top edge gilt and other edges untrimmed. Pictorial endpapers, 12 mounted colour illustrations and 20 line drawings. A fine bright copy, with just a touch of foxing to the extremities.
Dickens completed writing A Christmas Carol in November 1843 and was determined to produce it as a beautiful Christmas gift book. Rackham's deluxe issue of this story carries on this tradition, being a large beautiful production, with creamy vellum, gilt decoration and handmade paper. The colour plates in this deluxe edition have a far greater depth and clarity than those in the smaller trade edition.
