The History of the Wine Trade in England Volume I. The Rise and Progress of the Wine Trade in England from the Earliest Times until the Close of the Fourteenth Century; Volume II. The Progress of the Wine Trade in England During the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries; Volume III. The Wine Trade i
Wyman & Sons, 1906.
Three volumes, all first editions. 8vo. Original dark green cloth titles and vignettes in gilt. Top edge gilt. Volumes I and III signed by Simon, volume II inscribed by him to friend and fellow wine merchant, "To V. Masraff from André Simon." Twenty photographic plates, plus a fold out panoramic view of Bordeaux in 1669 split between volumes two and three. An unusually bright set, in very good condition indeed. The books use a heavy stock which means that rarely do they survive in decent condition.
Simon's monumental early work on the wine trade, comprehensively covering it in all its forms from the earliest time to the end of the seventeenth century. Rarely encountered as a complete work due to the poor selling of the first volume.
"Volume I sold so poorly that the 'prints' of Vols. II and III were drastically reduced. Consequently Vols. II and III are rare, although Vol. I can sometimes be found. Essential reference works." - Gabler (Wine into Words)
PROVENANCE: From the library of Vahan Masraff fellow wine merchant and friend of Simon's.
