POSTGATE, Raymond (ed.) Good Food Guide 1951-1952

Cassell, 1951.

First edition. Original green cloth lettered in gilt in orange dustwrapper printed in red and green. A very good copy in a very good dustwrapper with a small chip to the head of the spine and a couple of short closed tears.

The first issue of The Good Food Guide. Postgate had founded the Good Food Club in 1949 in response to what he perceived as the desultory standard of cooking in British restaurants at the time and the unreliable nature of restaurant reviews. He encouraged its members to visit restaurants and report back, stating, "You can corrupt one man. You can't bribe an army", thus founding the principal of consumer review, which has gone on to revolutionise modern consumer behaviour.
