Treasure Island
Cassell & Co. Ltd., 1883.
First edition, first issue with eight pages of adverts dated 5R-1083, thought to be earliest state. Contains textual points, 'rain' for 'vain' on page 40, 'dead man's chest' not capitalised on page 2 and 'worse' for 'worst' on page 197. The 7 is present in page 127 and the 8 present in page 83. A very good copy, a little faded to the spine, with faint splash to the upper cover. A little wear to the spine ends. Upper hinge splitting with bookplate to pastedown and ownership inscriptions to the half title and verso of the front endpaper. Internally fresh.
Treasure Island was originally written as a pendant to the now-famous treasure map the author had drawn to entertain his young stepson "on a rainy day in the Scottish Highlands" (Grolier), and was serialised in Young Folks magazine from October 1881 to January 1882 under the pseudonym "Captain George North". It was only with the appearance of this first edition, however, that it received any kind of critical attention, and "was immediately hailed by critics as a classic".
