THE MEMORIAL LUTYENS

BUTLER, A. S. G. The Architecture of Sir Edwin Lutyens With: The Life Of Sir Edwin Lutyens

Country Life, 1950.

The complete Lutyens memorial. Four volumes, all first editions. Three volumes folio, one quarto. Each in the original green cloth, lettered gilt, with the original printed dustwrappers. Top edges red. Photographic frontispieces to each of the Architecture volumes, followed by reproductions of 338 architectural drawings, and 721 photographs. Portrait frontispiece to the Life, followed by 178 illustrations on plates. A handsome set, the books and their contents in fine condition, the dustwrappers very good indeed, tanned a little to the spine, with a little spotting and wear to the edges.

The definitive study of Lutyens's life and work, published six years after his death, which according to Gavin Stamp, asserted "the continuing relevance of his achievement".
In his introduction to the Life, Hussey acknowledges that "In [Lutyens's] lifetime he was widely held to be our greatest architect since Wren if not, as many maintained, his superior", and later argues:
"the Thiepval Memorial, the Poultry bank, and the designs for Liverpool Cathedral … constitute forward bases, of great cogency, established by Lutyens's genius as starting points for the advance of the Humanist tradition into the questionable future. They embody in architectural language his 'true spirit', his faith in accumulated knowledge, his insistence on unity based on reality, and his humanity."
It is uncommon to find sets of this work complete with all four volumes, in uniformly nice condition, and with their dustwrappers.
