ENID BLYTON'S RARE FIRST BOOK
Child Whispers
J. Saville & Co. 1922.
First edition. Oblong 8vo. Issued in yellow card covers, with a pretty line illustration of a child surrounded by fairies. 24pp. Cover design by Phyllis Chase. A book of poetry for children, not dissimilar in style to those that would follow a few year's later from the pen of A.A. Milne. A very good copy indeed of this rare and fragile book.
Working as a teacher Enid Blyton struggled to find poems of the type that really engaged her young pupils and thus set about writing some herself.
"I have found the children delight in two distinct types of verses. These are the humorous type and the imaginative poetical type- the humour must be from a child's point of view and not from a 'grown-ups' - a very different thing. And the imagination in the second type of poem must be clear and whimsical, otherwise the appeal fails."
First editions of this work are now most uncommon, especially so in such nice condition.
