EDITION DE LUXE
Shakespeare's Comedy of the Tempest
Hodder and Stoughton, 1908.
First edition illustrated by Dulac. 4to. Number 492 of 500 deluxe copies signed by Dulac. Bound in the original publisher's full white vellum with decorations and lettering embossed in gilt. Top edge gilt. Silk ties present. Forty colour plates (one of which has a central crease) mounted onto green art paper under captioned tissue guards. A near fine, bright copy, just slight rubbing to the gilt in a couple of places.
The Tempest was Dulac's second major gift book, and was considered by The Bookman to be one of "the most beautiful gift-books of modern times". The subtlety of tone and colour in his exquisite illustrations perfectly capture the charm of Shakespeare's Arcadian dream, and his realisation of the concept "We are such stuff as dreams are made of" is "an example of pure, spontaneously felt painting" [White, p36]
