First edition. Oblong 4to. Cloth spine and paper covered boards illustrated in colour. Colour title page and many colour plates. There are also small line drawings printed in brown on the text pages. A fine example of the first in the series of Golliwogg books, with just the tiniest rubs to the corners. Most uncommon in this condition.
This book plays a significant role as it sees the first appearance of a black doll called a "Golliwogg". The story revolves around 2 wooden dolls who encounter the Golly. The character of the Golliwogg was so warmly received that the future stories in this series have him as the central figure.
