First edition. 8vo. One of two hundred and thirty copies printed at the Cranach Press on handmade paper, numbered 174 and signed by the translators to the limitation page. Vellum spine and tips over buff paper boards, lettered gilt. In the original parchment paper dustwrapper, housed in the original grey paper slipcase. Woodcut initials designed and cut by Eric Gill. A fine copy, unblemished and completely free from foxing. The rare dustwrapper is very crisp, though tanned slightly to the spine, and the original slipcase is a little worn. Altogether an exceptionally nice copy and most uncommon thus.
A beautifully produced and uncommon Hogarth Press title. In their translators' note, the Sackville-West's contend that "Rilke himself considered the Duineser Elegien as the climax of his work, and there seems every reason to agree with this opinion... the Elegies remain a monument, in their strange perfection, of absolutely first class poetry".
