First edition. Original dark blue cloth with titles and vignette of Shackleton's ship, Endurance, on the upper cover in silver. Colour frontispiece and 85 black and white photographic plates. Fold out map to rear. A near fine copy, pages are browned with very slight fraying to the last two leaves, as usual due to the poor quality paper stock. There are a couple of closed tears to the map, repaired to the verso The hinges are perfect and the binding tight. Externally, both cloth and silver blocking are notably bright and crisp with no mentionable wear. A handsome copy of this classic work of exploration, rarely encountered in such nice condition.
This account of Shackleton's last expedition is an amazing story of how Shackleton led his team through a two year trial, when their ship was trapped by pack ice. The crew survived on board for a year before the ship began to sink and Shackleton's brave leadership ensured that after a gruelling two years all his crew were saved.
