Flying slowly in the moonlight... came a large tawny owl
1960.
An original scraperboard drawing. 22 x 18cm. Author's annotation in biro to rear, "Ch.3, p30. Flying slowly in the moonlight... came a large tawny owl" A handsome illustration in very good condition indeed, save for a small chip to the lower right hand corner which will not be visible once mounted.
From page 45, chapter 3 of Vix - The Story of a Fox Cub, published by Ernest Benn in 1960. "And then, flying slowly in the moonlight, there came a large tawny owl, silent as a giant moth. In its claws it grasped a young rabbit."
The Adventures of Vix are taken from the lives of real foxes observed by the author (BB) in the Lake District.
