Crum, nicknamed "Crumbo", won four Boat Races for Oxford, where he was also President of the OUBC. The Times ranked him as "among the best No. 7's Oxford has ever known; for grace and ease of style he was, indeed, the ideal oarsman", while his Vanity Fair profile noted his "beautiful complexion" and "ignorance of our standard novelists." He later moved to India where he worked on the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and the Imperial Legislative Council, before serving as a Major in the Calcutta Light Horse during the War.
