Original dark brown buckram ruled in black and lettered in gilt, with a vignette of a lion in brown to the upper panel and vignette of the defassa waterbuck in gilt to the spine. Top edge gilt. Fifty mounted colour plates after paintings by Wilhelm Kuhnert. A very good copy indeed, bright and clean throughout, with some minor discolouration to the bottom corners of the upper and lower panels.
Lydekker's fifty commentaries on animals from each continent as diverse as the lion, polar bear, hamster and goldfinch are each accompanied by a vibrant illustration by Kuhnert.
