Studies in the development of narrative
A History of Story-Telling Studies in the development of narrative
T. C. & E. C. Jack, 1909.
First edition. Blue buckram with gilt lettering and vignette. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Twenty-seven portraits of famous authors by Jessie Gavin. A very good copy indeed, with some toning to the spine and a little wear to the spine ends.
Biographical sketches of authors ranging from Chaucer and Cervantes to Flaubert and Maupassant. Reviewing the book in November 1909, the Times Literary Supplement approved of Ransome's essays, but were less kind about Miss Gavin's illustrations (and took her for a man) "the book is non-academic in style, and contains much sound and interesting matter... we do not much admire Mr J. Gavin's imaginary portraits - least of all Jane Austen."
PROVENANCE: From the collection of John Cowen, Ransome collector and scholar. (no markings)
