Essays, poems, maxims & prose passages arranged by Arthur Ransome.
The Book of Friendship Essays, poems, maxims & prose passages arranged by Arthur Ransome.
T. C. & E. C. Jack, 1909.
First edition. Original dark blue cloth with lettering and decoration in gilt, in the brown pictorial dustwrapper. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed, yellow page marker ribbon. Leaflet of publisher's adverts for "Beautiful Books" loosely laid in, along with John Cowen's notes on this copy. Black and white frontis and tailpiece by Byam Shaw. A bright, near fine copy, with just a little fading to the spine and lower margin, in a very good dustwrapper, with some short tears and small chips to the extremities.
The length of the list of contents is an index to the number of acknowledgements I should like to make, to dead men whose genius (for friendship or for its expression) makes them live, and to living men whose works, without being shamed by the comparison, bear proximity to those of the dead. Arthur Ransome, 'To The Friendly Reader'
Among the authors represented are Shelley, Keats, Cicero, Bacon and Milton.
PROVENANCE: From the collection of John Cowen, Ransome collector and scholar.
