Rip Van Winkle
Heinemann, 1919.
Beautiful copy in the rare publisher's special leather binding. Original brown/black morocco with gilt lettering and vignette. Top edge gilt. 4to. Fifty one colour plates by Rackham are mounted onto green art paper and protected by tissue guards. Apart from the frontispiece all plates are mounted together at the end of the text, giving the pleasure of page after page of illustration. Two plates have slight abrasions. A fine copy.
This book was the first of the opulent Christmas Gift books. Its beauty and popularity began the "Golden Age of Book Illustration," in which publishers and illustrators competed to present the most beautiful volumes to the gift market.
