First edition with illustrations by Willy Pogany. 4to. Original black boards with silver decorative borders and a black and white pictorial onlay. Twelve full page illustrations by Pogany in addition to a black and white plate laid onto the upper panel. A near fine copy, with slight abrasion to the silver border of the upper cover.
On the return journey from Meccah, Burton composed this gem of Oriental poetry, The Kasidah," or "The Lay of the Higher Law, under the pseudonym of Haji Abdu El-Yezdi. At heart this is a distillation of Sufi thought in a poetical form - Burton has looked at Western methods of thought and philosophies, from the Sufi point of view.
