HEANEY, Seamus Christmas Card 2007

Peter Fallon/The Gallery Press, 2007.

Heaney's Christmas card for 2007, one of 300 copies. Single cream sheet, folded once, with illustration of Norse boat to front cover. With the original envelope. Presentation copy, inscribed by Heaney to the manuscript collector and dealer Roy Davids, "Roy, Wishing you quiet nights in the scriptorium - Seamus & Marie." The card features an anonymous 9th century poem in Old Irish, together with a translation into English by Heaney and O'Neill: "Is acher in gaíth innocht. Fufuasna fairggae findfolt. Ní ágor réimm mora minn dond láechraid lainn úa lothlind. The wind is fierce tonight. Mane of the sea whipped white. I am not afraid. No ravening Norse On course through quiet waters." A fine copy.
