A Novel
Pride and Prejudice A Novel
Bentley, 1833.
First one volume edition and first illustrated edition (fourth edition overall). Contemporary half calf over cloth boards, all edges marbled Steel engraved frontispiece showing Elizabeth Bennet and her father, and engraved title page depicting Elizabeth Bennet and Lady Catherine de Bourgh. A very good copy, neatly rebacked to style, with a little light wear to the corners of some of the preliminary pages and a short internal closed tear to leaf B4. Occasional foxing or finger marks, but a generally clean and well presented copy.
No reissue of J[ane] A[usten]'s novels is known after 1818 until in 1832 Richard Bentley decided to include then in his series of Standard Novels... Bentley's reprinting of the novels, each complete in one volume, was presumably intended for the private buyer; there is evidence that some circulating libraries were still well supplied with copies of the original editions (Gilson - A Bibliography of Jane Austen)
Royal A. Gettman's study of the Bentley papers states that under 4000 copies of this edition were published.
