First edition. Original maroon cloth with black lettering. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on publication, to the front end paper, "Harold with Morgan's love, 7.6.24" A good copy with some wear to the spine ends and a split at the head of the rear joint.
Forster's greatest and most famous novel, presentation copies of which are uncommon. This copy is inscribed to Harold Barger (1907-1989), son of Forster lifelong friend George. Forster was at Cambridge with George Barger and he and his wife, Florence, remained close friends and confidants. Forster maintained an extensive correspondence with Florence, whom he described as "my only woman friend." Harold Barger became a noted economist and professor at Columbia University, where his papers are held, and maintained a correspondence with Forster until his death in 1971.
