Athos: Treasures and Men
INSCRIBED TO ANTHONY POWELL
The Station Athos: Treasures and Men
Duckworth, 1928.
First edition. Original blue cloth with gilt titles on the spine. Author's presentation copy inscribed on the front end paper to novelist, Anthony Powell, "Tony, with bitter remorse for his sufferings, Robert / June.7.28". With Powell's bookplate to the front pastedown. A very good copy indeed with a little wear to the spine ends.
A fine association. Powell and Byron were contemporaries and friends at both Eton and Oxford. Powell used his position at Duckworth to help Byron find a publisher for The Station and it may be to this which Byron alludes in his inscription.
The Station is Byron's second book written at the age of 22 and attracted high praise on publication.
"No better portrait of the Holy Mountain exists than this, written as it was nearly sixty years ago; nor is it likely to be surpassed in the future. Here, in short, is a classic. And a classic it will remain." (John Julius Norwich)
PROVENANCE: From the library of Anthony Powell, bookplate on pastedown.
