The legend of Tom Thumb is a folk tale of ancient origins based on oral traditions in a number of cultures. The earliest known English prose version, The History of Tom Thumbe, the Little, for his small stature surnamed, King Arthurs Dwarfe, dates from 1621 and firmly links it to the Arthurian Legend, casting Arthur as the central character and Tom as the smallest knight of the Round Table.
