Bill the Minder
Constable & Co. Ltd., 1912.
First edition. 4to. Green cloth with gilt lettering and decoration and colour onlay to the upper cover. On the front free endpaper is a warm inscription from William Heath Robinson to close friends, "To Mr and Mrs Alfred Barwood with very best wishes for their future happiness & prosperity from their old friends Mr and Mrs W. Heath Robinson." Below the inscription is an 18cm high original cartoon style self portrait of the artist, signed "W. Heath Robinson, 1912." Frontispiece and fourteen colour plates under captioned tissue guards. Many black and white illustrations including full page title pages for each story. A very good copy, spine a little faded and some foxing to the text.
Written and illustrated by Heath Robinson, it is a classic Edwardian flight of fancy, logical and absurd in equal measure. It tells of a young boy, charged with looking after his two cousins and the adventures they encounter, where Bill uses his talent for invention to help those around him.
PROVENANCE: From the library of Alfred Barwood, family friend of W. Heath Robinson; then John Lewis, typographer and artist, author of Heath Robinson, Artist and Comic Genius, bookplate on front pastedown.
