Hamish Hamilton, 1963.
First edition. 8vo. Pictorial boards in matching pictorial dustwrapper. Illustrated in line throughout by Briggs. A very good copy, some scattered foxing and bookseller's label to the front pastedown, in a good dustwrapper which is bright and complete but the front panel has some biro scribble, previous owner's name inked in and initial title letter coloured in.
One of the first of his books both written and illustrated by Briggs, this charming story concerns Ernie the Milkman who is helped to complete his milk round on Christmas Day by a group of children. The character of Ernie is based on Briggs' father Ernest, also a milkman for the Co-op, who Briggs used to help out on his rounds as a child.
