ONE OF ONLY 50 COPIES
Treasure Island
Benn, 1927.
First edition, deluxe issue. Number 45 of only 50 copies, signed by Edmund Dulac. Publisher's creamy vellum with morocco title label. Top edge gilt. In publisher's card slipcase. Twelve colour plates and numerous black and white drawings in the text. A near fine copy, a little bowed with slight darkening to the spine and a trace of wear to the spine label, but the boards are uniformly clean and internally very fresh and free from foxing. The slipcase shows some wear and splitting to the edges, but is sound and has done its job in protecting the book. Overall an excellent copy of a noted rarity.
The tiny print run makes this one of the rarest of all the illustrated gift books. The illustrations for this book mark a new departure in Dulac's work. He enters a phase of greens and blues, views the scenes from above and afar. Hughey says, "The detailing and design of the pictures present some of Dulac's most careful and superb painting." In fact, the watercolours he produced for this book were his own favourites.
