Five volumes, first editions. 8vo. Original green cloth elaborately decorated in gilt and black with a different hand painted flower to the upper cover of each volume. All edges gilt. Two hundred full page colour chromolithographic plates (40 to each volume), plus engraved head and tail pieces for each entry. A good set, some foxing to text, volume three endpaper detached and worn.
The author's first major work combining his amateur interest in natural history to an art, illustration and writing livelihood supported by his association with various colleges and other institutions. The work was originally issued in monthly parts between 1878 and 1884 with the cloth bound volumes being issued from late 1883 at the unusually high price of 12/6.
