This book recounts the impressions Dorothy and Mortimer Menpes formed of children from different cultures as they travelled around the world, ranging from the "sweet innocence" of the English child, to the obedience of the French child and the "queer, half-sad, half-happy life" of the Chinese child. The book discusses the attitudes towards children and their role in society in each of the countries he visits, which include Italy, Spain, Rumania, Holland, North America, Mexico, India, China, Japan, Russia, Egypt and Burma.
