Autograph Letter Signed
1907.
A two page letter by the twenty year old Sassoon to a school or Cambridge friend, "My dear Friend", on Weirleigh letter paper, saying he would "come over + listen" to concerts given by "yr. artistic sister". Sassoon mentions his illness, "I have had flu so I am not back at Cambridge", and asks his friend to book a room at "that nice pub". He finishes by asking "What fo you think of the new book of Drake? I think it a little bit overdone as regards language & rythmn [sic.]. This latest bit I read to-day - every other line has 3 or 4 extra syllables" Central creases, a bit spotted with a small abrasion to the upper corner of the second page.
An early, unpublished, letter.
Sassoon had entered a poem for the Chancellor's Medal at Cambridge in December 1906 and having been stricken with flu in the New Year stayed on at Weirleigh, vowing not to go back to Cambridge until a winner was announced. As it happened, Sassoon was not even a runner up and left Cambridge without a degree shortly afterwards.
