Little Black Sambo

BANNERMAN, Helen

BANNERMAN, Helen Little Black Sambo

Grant Richards, 1899.

First edition. 16mo. Dumpy Book no. 4. Green cloth with dark green lines and lettering. 57 pages of this delightful story of the little black boy named Sambo and his encounters with the tigers in the jungle. Bright, colourful illustrations by the author. A very good copy indeed. The covers are bright and clean, as are the contents, there is an attractive bookplate on the front pastedown and a 1 cm long closed tear to the fore edge of the blank endpaper.

This story was written during the author's journey to India. Her intention was to present the tale and its charming pictures to her children, who had remained at home in Scotland. Like so many of these classic children's tales an enthusiastic reception to the story led to its being published by Grant Richards as the fourth in their series of "Dumpy Books". Over the years the story has been at the centre of much controversy, criticised for promoting racist views. The author's intentions, however, were simply to create an amusing children's tale and as the story is still popular with children over a century later she has certainly achieved this. This book has earned its place on the list of the most important and influential pieces of children's literature and is now a greatly sought after and rare item.
