In the first place, Cranford is in the possession of Amazons
Cranford
Chapman and Hall, 1853.
First edition. 8vo. Original olive green cloth with gilt titles and vignette to the spine. Front and rear board with blind stamped decoration. A very good copy indeed, uncommon thus. The original cloth is bright and attractive, with a little tanning to the spine. Hinges have been professionally repaired and there is a small paper repair to the lower left corner of the title page.
Cranford portrays everyday events in a small provincial town. The opening line "In the first place, Cranford is in the possession of Amazons" refers to the powerful, mainly older women (the Amazons) who determine the order of things in the town and try to ensure the safeguarding of "social gentility".
The story was serialised in Household Works, before being published anonymously in 1853. First editions in original cloth are most uncommon.
PROVENANCE: Contemporary ownership inscription dated 1853 to front endpaper; Bookplate of Jean Herscholt to front pastedown.
