Bound in early full red morocco gilt by or in the style of Edwards of Halifax, central panel of roll tool with single fillet border, floriated cornerpieces, outer border of same roll tool and single fillet, spine in compartments with large sunburst tools and floriated cornerpieces, borders of linked diamond and star roll tools, fillets, cross hatching at head and foot of spine, narrow turn ins with linked diamond and quatrefoil roll tool, similar to that on spine. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. With fore edge painting depicting Gloucester Cathedral across the River Severn, after W.H. Bartlett. A lovely clean bright copy, the binding almost untouched. Nineteenth century newspaper cuttings pasted to verso of front free endpaper with inscription. Fore edge painting very clear.
A superb early morocco binding, likely by Edwards of Halifax with a ninteenth century fore-edge painting. The fore edge painting is of Gloucester Cathedral and is copied from an illustration by W.H. Bartlett for Finden's Ports, Harbours, Coast Scenery and Watering-Places of Great Britain, first published 1838.
PROVENANCE: William Henry Moore Hodder (d. 1859) of Hoddersfield, County Cork, Colonel of the North Cork Militia, whose ink inscription refers to the death of his father, also Willam Henry Moore Hodder, in 1834, with newspaper cuttings relating to the family's marriages and deaths.
