Publisher's green cloth, gilt titles to spine, gilt rules to upper cover, blind ruled to rear cover. Purple endpapers. A very good copy, a little toned to spine and hinges tender. Small bookplate to front endpaper.
William Charles Lake (1817-1897) was a life-long friend of Matthew Arnold, having met the budding poet when both attended Rugby, where Arnold's father was headmaster. Both men attended Oxford and traveled in the same intellectual circles. Lake later became Dean of Durham.
