The Water Babies
Jack, 1910.
First edition illustrated by Katharine Cameron. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth lettered in gilt to spine, with pictorial onlay. Top edge gilt. Eight mounted colour plates. A very good copy indeed, light scuffs to pictorial onlay. Uncommon.
Katherine Cameron (1874-1965) was one of the group of female artists to emerge from the Glasgow School at the end of the nineteenth century known collectively as the 'Glasgow Girls'. Her style, with its "bold outlines and vivid colours" (Rosemary Addison) and characteristic combination of Art Nouveau and Celtic Revival lent itself perfectly to the more fantastic elements of book illustration. Her illustrations for this work are delicate and ethereal in some cases, while boldly coloured and Pre-Raphaelite in others.
