The Water Babies
Oxford University Press, 1929.
Early edition, illustrated by A.E. Jackson. Publisher's grey cloth decorated and lettered in gilt and blue to upper cover and spine, in the original printed dustwrapper. Two edges untrimmed. Gift letter loosely laid in. Pictorial endpapers. Sixteen colour plates mounted on grey art paper, in addition to numerous line drawings in the text, all by A.E. Jackson. A very good copy indeed, in a very good dustwrapper, tanned to spine and with wear to spine ends and edges.
Kingsley used children's books as a vehicle for his social commentary concerning the use of young children as chimney sweeps, and child labour of the Victorian period.
