Peter Rabbit's Bookshelf and story books
Warne, 1930.
Dark oak bookcase with hinged folding top section and paste on illustrated label. Containing all twenty three of the tales of Beatrix Potter, all contemporary with the bookshelf. The books are generally in near fine condition, most retaining the remains of their original unprinted glassine wrappers. 'The Tale of Mr Tod' has a chip to the spine, and the three books with enamel lettering show some flaking. Nearly all the books contain a neat gift inscription dated as 1934. The bookshelf itself is in excellent condition.
A rare example of the earliest of the 'Peter Rabbit Bookshelves', which appear in adverts from around 1934, initially only in this style and offered separately to the books. Later bookcases were made from pine or less expensive wood painted in pastel colours and did not have the fragile hinged top. Particularly notable is the fact that the books accompanying this bookshelf are strictly contemporaneous with the bookshelf and are likely to be the original set bought to fill it.
