Isabella Beeton was only twenty one when she started compiling her recipes and advice for newlywed women. Growing up with twenty one siblings, Beeton already had an understanding of the processes behind domestic upkeep. Her proficiency in French and German meant she was able to translate recipes and practical advice from overseas, to provide modern twists to British home-keeping. Beeton placed the ingredients list at the beginning of the recipe, something that is still implemented in modern times. After being compiled into one book, 'Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management', it sold 60,000 copies in the first year of publication. It is now regarded as one of the most extensive guides on the running of a household, the employment of servants and the structure of menus and recipes in Victorian Britain.
