First edition. Original green cloth with titles in green and brown. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper to fellow novelist, Hilaire Belloc, "Hillaire Belloc from Joseph Conrad March 1917." A very good copy with some tanning to the spine and a trace of wear at the spine ends.
A fine association. At the time of the novel's publication, both authors had sons fighting in France. The book is dedicated to Conrad's son, Borys, "and all others who like himself have crossed in early youth the shadow-line of their generation". Belloc's son Louis was killed at the front in northern France in 1918.
