Harris was a journalist and explorer who began his extraordinary travels in Yemen in 1892 when he entered the country disguised as a Greek merchant, and travelled from Aden to the capital at San'a to report on an anti-Ottoman revolt.
"Once in the city, Harris proudly waved his British passport, was promptly imprisoned as a spy, and remained in jail for five days before being allowed to wander freely through the city. He examined the ruins of the great palace-temple of Ghumdan, made his way to the Red Sea coast via Manakha, then returned to Morocco where his kidnapping by bandits caused an international incident" (Howgego).
The first part of the work in an historical overview of Yemen, and the second part covers the author's travels in the country.
