On Poetry and Poets
Faber and Faber, 1957.
First edition. Inscribed by T.S. Eliot for his colleague Rosemary Goad to the title page, "Inscribed for Rosemary Goad by T.S. Eliot". A very good copy in a good dustwrapper, worn, with large chips to spine ends.
An fine association copy, uniting two important figures in modern publishing.
T.S. Eliot joined Faber in its infancy of the 1920s, and shaped the editorial direction of the house as it published some of the great literary authors of the coming decades.
Goad joined the firm as a secretary in 1953, sharing a room with Valerie Fletcher, who would soon become Valerie Eliot on her marriage to T.S. Eliot in 1957. Goad progressed through the firm by doing publicity work while an assistant to Charles Montieth, before acquiring authors of her own to edit. In 1970 she became the first female director of the firm.
PROVENANCE: From the library of Rosemary Goad (1928-2021), the first female director of Faber & Faber.
