Morris produced a handwritten and illustrated book of poetry in 1870 as birthday gift for Georgiana Burne-Jones, the wife of Morris's friend Edward Burne-Jones. The text and artwork were a true collaboration, with Morris providing the poems, calligraphy and ornamentation, the illustrations by Burne-Jones, Fairfax and Wardle. The original manuscript was bought by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1952, and this production is the first publication of the manuscript of any kind.
