Sights and Scenes in Fair Japan
Imperial Government Railways, 1910.
First edition. Oblong folio (265 x 350mm). Original publisher's pictorial silk binding illustrating Mount Fuji, orange silk ties. All edges gilt. Endpapers decorated in gold and silver. Two colour maps. Fifty colour collotype plates of Japanese scenery and costume by Ogawa, captioned in English (each image 175 x 260mm). Ogawa's red stamp to the final leaf. A very good copy indeed, with some minor wear only to the binding's extremities. Some light adhesive and paper remnants to front free endpaper.
The first edition of this attractive photograph book on Japan. Later printings were issued without the maps, with the photographs in black and white, or under a different imprint.
Ogawa was a "pivotal figure in early Japanese photography... his publications were also instrumental introducing Japanese art and culture to a mass international market" (Terry Bennett, Photography in Japan 1853-1912, 2006).
