Third Chapman edition. Five volumes. 8vo. Bound by Bayntun Riviere in red half morocco, with five raised bands to the spines, lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. Illustrated throughout with illustrations contemporary to Austen's novels, as well as facsimile title pages of her early editions. A handsome set in very good condition, with just light signs of wear.
Generally considered the definitive Austen set, it combines authenticity both in appearance and in text with Austen scholar R.W. Chapman's appendicies and comments at the end of each volume including a chronology of each novel and such subjects as 'Miss Austen's English', 'The Early Editions', 'The Manners of the Age'.
