Rebus Gestis Alexandri Magni Macedonum Regis Historia Aucta nunc ac locupletat. Quae autem huic editioni accesserint, sequens docebit pagella.
Apud Seb. Gryphium [Sebastien Gryphe], 1548.
16mo in eights. Second edition in this format. Early armourial calf with gilt vignette and rules to the covers, and elaborate decoration to the spine. All edges gilt. A good copy, some wear to the spine ends, wanting front free endpaper, the corners bumped, rear joint split but holding, fresh internally but for an ink stain to title page. Bookplate sometime removed from front free pastedown.
A History of Alexander the Great, as written by the Roman historian Quintus Curtius Rufus of the first century AD. Originally published by Gryphe in octavo in 1545, USTC locates just three copies of this edition worldwide.
The armorial binding shows the Holy Family in a tree, God the Father at the top, Christ as a skeleton holding the Cross on his right and the Virgin and Child on his left. The motto reads "Nosce Te Ipsum" [Know Thyself]. The same stamp appears on contemporary copy of Cassius Dio's Romanarum Historiarum (Paris, 1548), acquired by Corpus Christi, Oxford on the 10th March 1616.
