A Mediterranean Journal
Labels A Mediterranean Journal
Duckworth, 1930.
First edition. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine in illustrated dustwrapper with the Book Society Choice sticker to the upper cover. Frontispiece from a drawing by Evelyn Waugh, plus one double page 'route map' and five further photographic plates. A near fine copy, slightly cocked with a trace of wear to the spine ends in a very good dustwrapper with some wear to the spine ends and the remains of a tape stain to the verso at the head of the spine.
The first of Waugh's travel books, essentially an account of his honeymoon following his hasty and ill-fated marriage to Evelyn Gardner. Tellingly though, Waugh writes as if he is travelling alone (in America the book was issued as A Bachelor Abroad), but parodies himself and his wife as the fictitious fellow travellers, Geoffrey and Juliet.
