First edition. Number 85 of 500 Deluxe copies SIGNED by Nielsen. 4to. Full white vellum with gilt lettering and gilt decorative panel with blue border. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Silk ties present. Pictorial endpapers illustrated in black silhouettes and gold designs. 25 colour plates are mounted on Japon and are all perfect under their captioned tissue guards. There are also a number of black and white drawings, chapter headings and decorative borders. A fine, bright copy. This copy has been kept in beautiful condition by its original slipcase, which is complete and attractive, with a little rubbing to the edges. The vellum and gilt are positively gleaming, there is a very light patch of spotting to the fore edge of the upper cover. An exceptional copy.
East of the Sun and West of the Moon represents Nielsen's "pièce de resistance" in book illustration. His illustrations are very striking, leaving a lasting impression, and combined with the luxury of the book's production form a breathtaking result. Widely acknowledged as one of the most important and impressive books of the Golden Age of book illustration.
