Early gift edition illustrated by William Hatherell. 4to. Brick red cloth with gilt lettering on the spine and elaborate balcony scene vignette printed in dark red on the upper cover. Twenty two colour plates by Hatherell mounted under captioned tissue guards. A near fine copy, some foxing to early pages, short split to upper joint at the base on the spine.
Hatherell's depiction of the Veronese lovers is a beautiful and enchanting one.
This edition differs from the first edition in having plain endpapers, the plates mounted onto plain brown card rather than decorated white card, and in being bound in red cloth with gilt titles to the spine only.
