Stories From the Arabian Nights Retold by Laurence Housman
Hodder and Stoughton, 1907.
First edition. 4to. Brown buckram with embossed decoration in gilt and blue. Colour frontis and 49 other colour plates all mounted onto grey art paper and protected by captioned tissue guards. The pates are fresh and crisp, not creasing, although one has a tiny corner scuff. A very good copy. A little foxing to the page edges, but otherwise clean with occasional looseness showing between sections.
This magnificent volume was Dulac's first major book commission. His 50 watercolour illustrations perfectly capture the mood of these Arabian Tales. Well known stories such as Ali Baba and the King of the Ebony Isle lend themselves to his rich colours, atmospheric scenes and dark starry skies.
